Steven's Relationship with Annette
By: Naman P.
Have you ever wondered about the significance of the friend? In Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenblick, Steven likes Renee Albert, but near the ending realized that he really liked his best friend, Annette. The relationship between Steven and Annette plays a significant role in the book because they are both there for each other, doesn't matter if happy or depressed.
There are many parts in the book where you can tell that Annette likes Steven, but Steven doesn't like her back. Even though Annette likes Steven, she never tells him and acts like a friend throughout the whole book. Steven had a crush on Renee Albert. “Unfortunately, all I could concentrate on was Renee Albert. Did I mention she's the hottest girl in the eight grade?” (Pg.2). This line proves that Steven liked Renee Albert. Renee obviously didn't like him. “Why doesn't Renee Albert ever look at me?”(Pg.2). In one part of the book, Renee finally talked to him. “Hi, Steven”(Pg. 128). This is the first time Renee talked to him in the book that we saw. After that, they became good friends. He still liked her though. In the end, he realized that Annette was the one he liked, and that Renee was the one he wanted to remain friends with. “Renee was beautiful, but she was my friend now. On the other hand, Annette was my friend, but now she was beautiful”(265-266). This shows that Annette was the one he really liked. Also, when Annette gives a kiss on Steven's cheek, it symbolizes her love for him.
When Steven says the lines on page 265-266, we could tell that Steven had fallen in love with Annette throughout the book. This might be because she tutored Steven when he was failing his classes. When Steven started talking about Renee and his crush on her, Annette got upset and started talking about how Steven drools over her like crazy. Also, she looked after Jeffrey sometimes, just for Steven. These are events in the book that tell us how much Annette loved Steven.
The relationship between Annette and Steven is really important because they are best friends and they are always there for each other. In the end, they both end up falling in love with each other. (To learn more about the symbolism of the drums, click here).
