How Jeffrey changes Steven
By: Kevin C.
It’s a changing world, everyone changes, people change, you change in order to adapt to your environment. In Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenblick, the main character Steven goes through changes because his little brother, Jeffery, got cancer.
Before Jeffery got cancer, Steven thought of Jeffery as your typical little brother, annoying, cute, and a constant follower, “The kid follows me around like I'm Elvis or something.”(pg.4). Steven always did his best in school, he tried not to look like a failure when his crush was around, he was the best of friends with Annette, loved to play drums, and worried about little things that didn't matter.
But then when Jeffery got cancer, Steven changed. He was grumpier, short tempered, and became sort of ungrateful. He stopped doing his homework, stopped listening to his teachers and classes, started keeping secrets that even Annette didn't know about, and started worrying about Jeffery 24-7 unless he was playing the drums (he was still amazing at that), “You're here because you have apparently stopped doing work in your major subjects” (pg. 118). But when Steven was near Jeffery he was Jeffery’s best friend, his companion, his protector. Steven sacrificed many things for Jeffery’s well-being like skipping his concert to be with Jeffery, “I had promised Samantha I would be there for Jeffery. There would be other concerts” (pg. 261). But at the same time he learned many things as well, “I used to think that having a brother was the worst thing in the world. But now I know that no having him would be worse.”(pg. 273)
How Steven changes to adapt to Jeffrey catching cancer is an important part of the story, if Steven didn’t change the way he did the whole story would be very different. (To learn about Steven's relationship with Annette, click here).
