How Steven changes over course of the book

Have you ever had a friend/family member that has had a very bad disease? In the book “Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie” by Jordan Sonnenblick, the main character Steven goes through the struggle of having his younger brother, Jeffrey, go through chemotherapy for Leukemia. In this article I will tell you how the main character, Steven, changes throughout the book.
At the start of the book Steven is your average 8th grade older brother. He is really not a fan of his younger brother, Jeffrey, because he is a big pest. One day Jeffrey asks Steven if he could make him some oatmeal, all of a sudden Jeffrey gets a HUGE nosebleed and is rushed to the ER by his mom. Later when Steven comes home from school his life is changed forever. Jeffrey is diagnosed with Leukemia which makes Steven become very depressed.
Closer to the middle of the book Steven realizes that he has pretty much dropped out of school and his grades were terrible. His teachers pull him out during his free period and asked him what’s happening. Steven goes into an emotional breakdown, crying and losing total control of his emotions. His teachers give him a packet to catch up on his work. Now Steven has to balance out his school work and Jeffrey.
Near the end of the book, Steven finally realizes that family comes first and it’s more important to what your family needs than what you want to do. When Jeffrey needed to go to the Emergency Room, Steven gives up the concert that was for Jeffrey to make sure he is ok and isn't scared. In the book, Steven was always there for Jeffrey and if it wasn't for him Jeffrey probably wouldn't have the will to live.
In conclusion, Steven changes emotions by going from a hater, to a very depressed kid, then finally to a great older brother. I feel as though Steven changes a lot for the better and if it wasn't for that this book wouldn't have ended well for anyone. The author did a very good job of laying out the characters of the book and made the book a lot more enjoyable. I hope this was helpful/enjoyable and you enjoyed the book.
